We are excited that the call for papers for our Biennial International Children and Childhoods Conference is open. We invite papers that theoretically and empirically engage with a broad range of disciplines reflecting the diverse nature of contemporary childhood studies.
The conference aims to bring together established academics, early career researchers, PhD candidates and students.
Please send 250 word abstracts for a 20 minute presentation, 500 word abstracts for panels and 150 word abstracts for posters: firstname.lastname@example.org. We welcome traditional presentations of 20 minutes with additional time for questions, pre-formed panels of speakers and posters; as well as alternative modes of presentation including performance, film, photography etc.

Afua Twum-Danso Imoh
Afua Twum-Danso Imoh is a Lecturer in the Sociology of Childhood at the University of Sheffield. She holds a PhD from the Centre of West African Studies at the University of Birmingham which focused on the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in Ghana. Since completing her PhD, her research has focused on the changing nature of parent–child relationships, the impact of cultural values such as reciprocity, respect, and responsibility on universal children’s rights standards, and the impact of globalization on the concept of childhood. Her work has been published in a number of edited collections as well as in peer-reviewed journals. She is the co-editor of two edited volumes: Childhoods at the Intersection of the Global and the Local (published by Palgrave in October 2012) and Children’s Lives in an Era of Children’s Rights: The Progress of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in Africa (published by Routledge in December 2013). She is member of the Centre for the Study of Childhood at the University of Sheffield and one of the series editors of Palgrave Macmillan’s Childhood and Youth Series.
Katherine Runswick-Cole is Professor of Critical Disability Studies & Psychology at Manchester Metropolitan University. She has published extensively in the field of critical disability studies. Much of her research has focused on the lives of disabled children, young people and, more recently, on working in coproduction with people with learning disabilities in research about their lives (humanactivism.org). Recent publications include: Disabled Children’s Childhood Studies: critical approaches in a global context (With Curran, Palgrave, 2013); Approaching Disability: Critical Issues and Perspectives (With Mallett, Routledge, 2014); Re-thinking Autism: disability, identity and diagnosis (With Mallett and Timimi, Jessica Kingsley, 2016) and the Palgrave Handbook of Disabled Children’s Childhood Studies (With Curran and Liddiard, Palgrave, 2017).
